Mystery

How great the multitude of truths which the garment of words can never contain! How vast the number of such verities as no expression can adequately describe, whose significance can never be unfolded, and to which not even the remotest allusions can be made! How manifold are the truths which must remain unuttered until the appointed time is come! Even as it hath been said: "Not everything that a man knoweth can be disclosed, nor can everything that he can disclose be regarded as timely, nor can every timely utterance be considered as suited to the capacity of those who hear it."

Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 176

Of these truths some can be disclosed only to the extent of the capacity of the repositories of the light of Our knowledge, and the recipients of Our hidden grace. We beseech God to strengthen thee with His power, and enable thee to recognize Him Who is the Source of all knowledge, that thou mayest detach  177  thyself from all human learning, for, "what would it profit any man to strive after learning when he hath already found and recognized Him Who is the Object of all knowledge?" Cleave to the Root of Knowledge, and to Him Who is the Fountain thereof, that thou mayest find thyself independent of all who claim to be well versed in human learning, and whose claim no clear proof, nor the testimony of any enlightening book, can support.

Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 176

I ask God to strengthen thee in comprehending the mysteries deposited in the reality of existence, to lift up the veil from before thee and thy sister, so that the concealed mystery and the hidden reality become manifest as the sun at noon, and to confirm thy sister and thy husband in entering the Kingdom of God, and heal thee from all physical and spiritual disease in the world of creation.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá v1, p. 56

The mysteries of the greater world, or macrocosm, are expressed or revealed in the lesser world, the microcosm. The tree, so to speak, is the greater world, and the seed in its relation to the tree is the lesser world. But the whole of the great tree is potentially latent and hidden in the little seed. When this seed is planted and cultivated, the tree is revealed. Likewise, the greater world, the macrocosm, is latent and miniatured in the lesser world, or microcosm, of man.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 69-70

God's wisdom is, indeed, inscrutable to us all, and it is no use pushing too far trying to discover that which shall always remain a mystery to our mind.

Shoghi Effendi, Unfolding Destiny, p. 434

If you read the utterances of Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá with selflessness and care and concentrate upon them, you will discover truths unknown to you before and will obtain an insight into the problems that have baffled the great thinkers of the world.

Shoghi Effendi, The Compilation of Compilations vol II, p. 2

Not only do all religions have their miracles and mysteries, but religion itself, and certain fundamental religious concepts, such as the nature of the Manifestations of God, are far from being explicable by present-day scientific theories.

Universal House of Justice, 1996 Feb 16, Misc. Questions - Talisman, Bahá’í Encyclopedia, Virgin Birth

The Manifestation of God (and, to a lesser degree, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi,) has to convey tremendous concepts covering the whole field of human life and activity to people whose present knowledge and degree of understanding are far below His. . . . It may well be that we shall find some statement is couched in terms familiar to the audience to which it was first addressed, but is strange now to us.

Universal House of Justice, 3 June 1982

Day by day the realization deepens in all conscious men and women that in this age new forces are seeking expression - forces so mighty that the difference between understanding and misunderstanding is the immediate crisis between the alternatives of a new, worldwide and spiritualized civilization and a further, even more disastrous undoing of the things that are. It is upon the plane of understanding that the power of the Bahá’í writings operates, in that are of being which lies beyond the personal desire, the personal thought, the personal will. Their operation is to restore in the individual, whatever his race, class, creed, profession or temperament, that eternal vision of the oneness of God whose evolving expression is directly the development of the soul, and indirectly the harmonious organization of mankind.

Compilations, Bahá’í Scriptures, p. v-vi

The Bahá’í teachings foster the use of the rational faculties in a spirit of inquiry, to unravel the mysteries of spiritual and material worlds, and to thus contribute to the growth of religious and scientific understanding. Hence, we may confidently anticipate that the mysteries of the organic growth will become progressively disclosed, as our understanding of the interplay between the spiritual and the material determinants of growth increase, and the passage of time reveals more fully the course followed by the Bahá’í Community in it’s expansion.
